GM pulls the plug on Saturn
Way to go GM, great job killing off one of your only brands that was actually doing well! Because of the whole bailout, GM had to start axing brands and quickly. Months ago, GM planned on selling Saturn to Penske in order to keep the brand alive, dealerships open and keep employees jobs. Unfortunately that deal fell through and now the plug has been pulled.
This is really unfortunate, Saturn was beginning to pump out some pretty nice cars. Of course, they were pretty much all rebadged Opel’s but god dammit, America needs more European cars. The Saturn Astra is doing pretty well here, I see a lot of them. The styling is good, overall the car is pretty good but a Redline version would have totally sealed the deal of it being my next car.
I drove a Saturn Aura for a week last year when I was staying in LA. I was completely impressed by the quality of the car. It was just a base model rental car but it still had a ton of options. It completely surprised me.
The sad news is that it’s not really Saturn’s fault for their own failing. The auto industry has been on a downhill plunge since the economy tanked. All auto makers are in some sort of trouble these days it seems. Saturn just had less money because they’ve always been on the GM backburner as they focused more on trucks and suv’s.
On the plus side, does this mean the price of the Saturn Sky will drop now? Hmmm… Guess GM has a bit more cash to through into other dying brands nobody cares about like Buick.
